Born on November 8, 1935, in the Paris suburb of Sceaux, Alain Delon experienced family upheaval early. His parents separated while he was young, and both eventually remarried. His mother’s working life took her from a pharmacy to his father’s cinema, and later to her new husband’s butcher’s business. Amid these changing households and arrangements for his care, Delon later recalled feeling that he did not truly matter to anyone.

Stardom was still ahead, but these early years reveal something his celebrated appearance could never fully convey: a young man searching for direction, belonging, and a place of his own.
