BREAKING: One of America's most famous bridges was COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN this morning!The Mackinac Bridge in Michigan - the 5-mile long bridge connecting Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas - was closed at 3:32 AM after a serious 2-car crash. Police say one vehicle rear-ended another, leaving 2 people seriously injured.
The bridge was closed for over 4 hours in BOTH directions. Thousands of drivers were stranded.
Why this is scary:
This bridge is 67 years old and carries 11,000 cars EVERY DAY. It's the 3rd longest suspension bridge in America.
Yesterday was the 37th anniversary of the only person who ever died falling from this bridge - a woman in a Yugo car in 1989. The timing is eerie.
Michigan police say high winds are STILL affecting the bridge today. Winds on this bridge have reached 50 mph this week.
This comes as CSX rail bridges in Pennsylvania and Rhode Island are ALSO closed this week for emergency structural failures from the 1960s.
